Our Histories

Why do this?

I chose to do genealogical research because I wanted to know more about my family roots and heritage. I was curious about where my ancestors came from, what they did, and how they lived. I also wanted to find out if I had any relatives that I didn't know about, and I did! What did they do with their lives and how on earth they managed with all those children. I discovered less children seemed to be born after the wars and I wonder if I might have done the same. I found out that in eight generations going back to the mid or late 1700s, it took 256 ancestors to arrive at me. In time, I will be one of those ancestors disappearing into the mists of time. Genealogical research has been a rewarding and enlightening experience for me, as I have discovered many interesting and surprising facts about my family history. It has also given me a sense of identity and belonging, as I have learned more about myself and my place in the world. The photo above is of me, Caroline, sat on the knee of my beloved uncle Paul Winwood Forbes. We had just arrived in Adelaide, South Australia from Singapore. It was 1968 and I am grinning like a Cheshire cat.
